PROJECT STATUS
THE POST NORMAL PROJECT
‘Post Normal’ is a collaborative project undertaken by four Northern Rivers artists – Rich Stone, Beki Davies, Dave Hickson & Elise ('Elvis') Callaghan, during the 'stay at home' period (April to June) of the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic. The goal of this project is to create (& document) a single, free standing artwork that is developed sequentially in distinct, separate, isolated stages by each of the artists. The process will be recorded and then developed into a video art piece, as an integral component of the work.
Upon receiving the piece, each artist is free to interpret, develop and add to the artwork without constraint, but with perhaps an aim to maintain a sense of group cohesion and purpose for the work. The transit and hand-over of the work from artist to artist will follow all social distancing protocols. This project and the working method aims to promote communication and creative links within our artistic community, albeit fractured by the pandemic. The artists may enjoy a common, creative experience (‘together but alone’) and the public may also engage with the process via the sharing of photographic and video recordings as the work progresses. The project is part of the Together//Alone home residency program conducted by The Quad and Lismore Regional Gallery. |

The concept, by Rich Stone, has been created with a series of sketches and notes (a few shown above), followed by the formation of a 'collaborative of 4' to extend and develop the project.
Rich > Beki > Dave > Elvis The project plan is that Rich is to commence the making of the artwork, to then be handed over to Beki for her to progress the work, followed by delivery to Dave to further interpret and complete the piece. The concurrent development of the project film will be carried out by Elvis. As this project develops, the final visual outcome is unknown. It will be intriguing to see what forms of sensibility, artistic balance and cohesion may prevail in this work, either by design or accident. A fusion of influences and ideas will, no doubt, provide for an interesting creative exercise and outcome! STAGE 1 : THE FRAME (BY RICH)
The aim of the 'artwork frame' is to prepare a blank exoskeleton or subdued backdrop upon which the next artists can interpret, develop and install their own components of the piece.
The initial frame is characterised by an assembly of simple yet ordered elements, considered connections and a subdued finish of raw timber or white. As a viewer moves around the object, visual experiences are provided by outer and inner surfaces, implied spaces and interesting relationships between parts . |
